What was the highlight of Occidental Roca Negra

Nice hotel in a lovely part of the island

The check in was good, but no welcome glass of bubbly or soft drink was offered. The foyer, public seating areas and rooftop bar were all lovely for chilling out. Our room, no 320 was huge though it would benefit from a refurb. The double bed was enormous and very comfortable. The view of the sea was fab. We stayed half board and the food was excellent both at breakfast and dinner, plenty of salads and freshly cooked fish and the staff were lovely.

The biggest issue we had with this hotel was that the main dining room was far too brightly lit with mega LED lights, which made the dining experience quite austere and not at all relaxing. Also it was very crowded around the food area adding to a general feeling of discomfort. We also disliked that all the rooms are north facing, making them a bit dark and rendering the balcony unusable in the winter months, as it’s just too cold.

Excellent food, room, staff and facilities.

Limited street parking or €10/night. Room storage for clothes a bit limited. Angle of the hotel meant almost no sun on any of the balconies in January.

A truly lovely week with our friends made all the better by the choice of hotel.

Half board was exceptional. Wide ranging choices of delicious food served in a bright dining room by lovely staff. The rooms were huge; comfortable, bright and airy. Staff were very helpful both at reception and in the dining room. The pool area was clean and well set out with plenty of sun beds - not sure what this would be like if the hotel was really busy though.

Once or twice we would have liked a drink before dinner and there wasn’t a bar open at that time. Also, we could not get a post dinner coffee anywhere without returning to our room - we were a group of 8 friends who wanted to gather together.

It was very good. Excellent relaxing spot to share a week in the winter sun with friends.

Lovely spacious bedrooms with great view the sea, excellent pool area, staff very friendly and helpful and good food.

Limited bar facilities as there was only the bar at pool open during day and often it closed before roof top bar opened just when a five oclock drink or cocktail would have been nice. No coffee facility in dining room in evening so you are not able to relax at the end of your dinner,, felt you were rushed out.

Good for a quiet week , car is handy, only a few restaurants opened in the Spring/Summmer.

Friendly staff, quiet location and pretty surroundings for access to Agaete Old town and the port. Food was ok and rooms spacious and very clean.

Lack of public toilets by pool, (×1 for 300 guests if full) Loud live music one day was not relaxing and outdated spa changing room facilities needs attention. Bed was too soft and uncomfortable.

Amazing views, good food and polite staff but...

Very polite staff and always willing to help. Amazing views and location of the hotel. Big comfortable room with balcony. Breakfast and Dinner buffet had big variety with really nice food.

We had half board which included dinner but charged when asked for drinking water as tap water is not suitable for drinking. Someone would think that water is a basic need especially with food and would be included not charged extra. Cockroach found in the room, staff disinfect and offered alternative room but declined as it was on a lower level without the expected view compared to original room/booking

Overall, the best hotel we have stayed in in recent years in this price range.

The hotel is located in a very peaceful but picturesque setting. The location is really great, both on the rocky plateau and for walking along the ocean, just a wonderful location. It's also perfect as an excursion centre to the island, obviously not a destination for party seekers. We were given a room on the top floor of the back wing, which despite not being booked as a sea-facing room, had a full ocean view (as we could see over the front wing building). This was a particular surprise. The hotel is extremely clean, the rooms in this wing are in perfect condition (except for one small detail, which I describe below). The facilities are very good (in fact, they provide things that are not obvious in other 4 star hotels, like razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shoe shine kit, etc, etc...). The beds were the most comfortable beds we've had in years, and we've been to a few places. Dinner was very tasty, as usual a different theme each day, the choice was moderately wide, we have been to places with a much wider choice. But we were satisfied. Breakfast is also of good quality, but again with a moderate selection. The same food there every day. Parking: we could always find a parking space on the road leading to the hotel, within 200 meters maximum. We had a very good experience with the staff, they were nice and helpful.

In fact, for this hotel, for this price level, we can't mention anything that would be a serious problem, we were very satisfied. The only inconvenience we had was that the towel rails in our room were possibly screwed on (badly, with faulty holes) and were also loose. But that's a small thing, everything else was perfect.

Wonderful

Lovely hotel - our room was huge with a sofa as well as the beds -also a large balcony overlooking the sea. Pool is heated, lots of comfy sun beds and a pool bar. All very clean and the staff everywhere are absolutely lovely - helpful , smiling. Fantastic sunsets from the Rocktop sky bar - and we loved the salt pools a short walk away down the path from the hotel.

If you are physically less able , there is no easy access steps into the pool - and no handrail to help get into the jacuzzi which is a big step down. My friend is a vegetarian and although there were always lovely salads and vegetables to accompany meals , there were rarely any purely vegetarian dishes. If you are not eating at the hotel , be prepared for a walk to restaurants etc.

Perfect quiet holiday in the presence of wild ocean seascapes...

Stunning location, a balcony looking out over the wild ocean, enormous buffet breakfast (fresh papaya was heavenly!), big swimming pool that you could swim proper laps in, really helpful and friendly staff (Gustavo kindly printed bus time-tables for us for local travel). In real life this hotel is exactly as portrayed in the photos; we felt like we were living like rock-stars for a week! The location is brilliant for walking - you get good exercise just going up and down the hill into town. Perfect place for a proper holiday, a week away from it all, with just the sound of the waves for company....
